MISSIONS SUPPORTED BY KENSINGTON COMMUNITY CHURCH
THE COPLEY YMCA, located only two miles from our church, serves a very needy area in San Diego. Each year Missions joins with others in our church in planning a Christmas party for over 1200 children, acquiring and wrapping hundreds of gifts, stuffing stockings, decorating the YMCA, and being present to host various stations.
THE INTERFAITH SHELTER NETWORK provides shelter, food, and support services to homeless people in search of permanent solutions. Missions actively participates in its two major programs. For the Rotational Shelter Program we provide food and supervision for one or more nights when the shelter is hosted by First United Methodist Church in Mission Valley. For the El Nido program, which gives support to homeless victims of domestic violence and their families, Missions furnishes an apartment and assists the family with its special needs.
THE FACELIFT PROJECT is a spruce-up-a-block-in-a-day event sponsored by Community Housing Works, a San Diego non-profit organization. It gives priority to senior citizens, disabled persons, and low income families that need assistance to make improvements to their homes. Missions provides volunteers to join with others in painting, removing debris, and providing minor landscaping for the selected houses.
MEALS-ON-WHEELS is a program in which volunteers deliver meals to seniors’ homes. Missions funds this organization both by direct contributions and by channelling cellphone recycling proceeds to the program.
CORAZON Missions’ funding of the Corazon scholarship program is used to pay registration fees and tuition and to buy shoes, books, and uniforms for needy children at attend public schools in Mexico.
HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS In our own arena, we provide a small scholarship to each graduating high school senior who has been an active member of Kensington Community Church.
OUR CHURCH’S WIDER MISSION (OCWM) sponsors four UCC-wide offerings:
- One Great Hour of Sharing
- Strengthen the Church
- Neighbors in Need
- The Christmas Fund
OTHER MISSIONS FUNDING In addition to the missions noted above, this committee provides funding for the following entities:
- San Diego Partnership Churches
- La Romana Mission in the Dominican Republic
- HELPS medical mission in Guatemala
- Neighborhood Care Center (El Cajon Blvd.)
- Conference dues
- UCC Association dues
